EU cooperation on green transition

The policy framework of Danish energy and climate policies are provided by EU legislation. Common targets, such as reductions of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable energy use and efficiency improvements are set at the EU level. Common targets are then harmonized with existing national legislation.

The EU Energy Union

Cooperation on energy and climate policy is concentrated in the EU Energy Union, with targets for making energy safer, cheaper and sustainable to deliver benefits for European consumers and to strengthen the competitiveness of European companies. The EU Energy Union covers five coherent and interrelated dimensions:

  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Increased energy supply security
  • Improved energy efficiency
  • The building of a fully integrated single market of energy
  • Research and innovation

Meetings of the Council of Ministers

The Danish Minister of Energy, Utilities and Climate participates in meetings in the Council of Ministers to discuss matters on the climate and energy policy agenda and to pass new EU legal acts. Enquiries about energy are as a main rule dealt with in the council formation concerning Transport, Telecommunication and Energy (TTE), whereas climate is dealt with in the Environment Council. The meetings are held every other month in Brussels and Luxembourg.
